Cyber-bullying is not to be taken lightly because there have been several incidents where teens committed suicide because of harassment on the Internet.
Most cyberbullies are girls. It is easy to cyber-bully as they can hide behind their computer and they cannot see the impact of their action on the victim. Most cyberbullying happen away from the school ground,
out of the reach of the teachers.
The types of cyber-bullying are:
* spreading rumours
* posting hurtful pictures or videos
* sending mean, vulgar or threatening messages
* posting sensitve or private information
Parents need to be more aware of their teens’ usage of the computer, monitor what their kids are writing online, and recognise any warning signs in their behaviour.
The challenge is the communication gap between the parents and their teens. The kids have their own online text lingo. Teachers and parents need to learn their online language.
