Teachers Threatened by Students

Thuggist students in a secondary school in northern Taiwan were making death threats against the teachers. When a teacher stepped in to try to stop a fight between two parties, the male student railed at him, saying “I will bring a gun to kill all of you!”

The teachers accused the principal of doing nothing to safeguard their safety as well as that of innocent students against roguish students who had threatened to kill them with guns. When the gun threats were brought to the attention of the police, they were indifferent. It cause the teachers to suspect there was collusion to cover up the case to protect the reputation of the school principal.

64 teachers petition and as a result the principal was sacked.
The moral of the story: Do not allow the thugs to overrun the school. Together you can do something even if the principal and the police are not helpful.

School Punished Bully and Victim

When I read this news today, I cannot believe it is happening in a modern country where educationalists are supposed to have the brains to discern what is right and wrong when it comes to dealing with bullies.

After reading this story, I was wrong to assume that school authorities know how to deal with bullying problems.

Alexander wrote to the newspaper. He is the parent of a son who was bullied and beaten by a few student. He reported the matter to his school principal and the police. The school authorities told the police they would handle the matter and so the police dropped their investigation.

The school did handle the matter – by caning both the bully and his son, the latter for retaliating by pushing the bully back when he was attacked.

The whole incident sent a clear message: Do not bring up such an issue.

Readers, don’t you think what the school did was outrageous?

How to Stop Bullying

Logan Lee, a martial art school owner, offers an insight into tackling bullying problem.

“For the most part, if there is a bully issue, it’s more of a behavioral issue,” Lee said. “That bully has picked out this particular child for a reason. If we can find out what that reason is, then we can work on that. They (bullies) are looking for a weakness and for some reason that bully has seen a particular weakness in this child. If we can figure out what that weakness is, then we can work on ways to counter that weakness.”

Learning martial art is an effective way to build self-confidence and self-esteem in the victim.

There is no one-size advice or solution.

“There are some bullies that if you stand up to them, they’ll leave you alone. There are some bullies that if you stand up to them, they’ll hit you in the face,” Lee said.

Anderson said she tries to teach her younger students to not be “an easy target” for a bully. She said she advises students to walk with more confidence and make eye contact with the bully instead of avoiding them entirely.

Bullying in India

bullying is a form of torture and is a violation of Human Right. Eight out of 10 children in India have been through negative online experiences that include cyber-bullying or online harassment, and only 50 percent of the parents know what their children go through, according to a recent survey in India.

A fifth of workers feel ‘bullied’ by their boss

A study commissioned by the UK’s fastest growing HR consultancy has revealed that 21% of Brits feel ‘bullied’ by their boss at work, whilst a further 28% feel picked on by a peer at work. However, only 8% admitted to reporting the incidents.

Effect of Bullying

According to a survey in Singapore, those who are bullied are more prone to depression and have poorer self esteem than those who were not bullied. This goes to show that bullying has long term effect. It is damaging and not to be taken lightly.

Bully Free Forum

Bullying has become a growing concern among educators in Singapore. A survey by the Singapore Children’s Society in 2006 found one in five pupils was a bully victim in school.

How far have we progress as a nation in terms of tackling bullying in school? Do schools have strict policies for bullying? Are teachers train to detect and manage school bullying?

The interview with Ms Tan Bee Joo, deputy director of the Singapore Children’s Society’s Student Service Hub in Straits Times dated 17th July 2010 is telling.

She said that schools should adopt a policy that clearly defines what bullying is, and the schools’ tolerance level towards it.

‘Teachers also need to be equipped with specific skills to detect and manage bullying. And programmes, such as a Bully Free Week could be organised,’ she added.

She cited Park View Primary School as an example. It is the first school in Singapore to embark on a school-based intervention programme in January last year.

Are there any other schools beside Park View Primary School?

Stop Cyberbullying

Why Cyberbullying is so Devastating

Cyberbullying is going to be more widespread than ever. It is the easy way to bully a victim.
The bullies say things which they have no courage to say directly to the victim.

It is ubiquitous. It is coming to a PC or mobile phone near you.

Your home is not safe from the abuse.

You do not know who the bully is.

Unlimited number of people know about the rumours.

The victims are vulnerable because they are too young to defend themselves. The problem get worse when authorities are not taking it seriously. To make it worst, they blame it on the victims and condemn them as socially incompetent and being too soft.

How to Stop Bullying

Parents can help their children by being  good role models in their ways they handle their anger, by being kind and empathetic.

Martial art training  will help the kids display a confident body language.

Help the kids to develop their talents so that they have their own circle of friends.

If your child displays signs of being bullied, take heed. If the child does not want to go to school or display distressed behaviours such as becoming withdrawn, more aggressive or complain of sickness, your child needs help.

Prevention is better than cure. One more bullicide case is one too many. Promote kindness. Don’t be a bystander. Stand up to the bullies. Schools should be preventive than reactive in their anti-bully policies.

Workplace Bullying is Common

In 2007, the Workplace Bullying Institute partnered with Zogby International to conduct the first nationwide study of adult Americans on the topic of workplace bullying.

The workplace bullying study found that 37% of workers, or about 54 million Americans, have been bullied at some point in their careers.  The vast majority, 72%, of workplace bullies are bosses.

When Fighting Back Works

This solution did it for me:

Growing up as a child of two intellectual parents they taught me to always solve conflicts verbally instead of using physical force. But my father also made it clear to me that I never had to accept physical violence directed towards me.

Being a jock in school who knew how to defend himself I never got involved in any physical altercations. Until one night, during a school trip, a bunch of guys wanted to show off in front of some girls. When I passed by, one guy, who had put himself in a leading position, decided to throw some insults towards me. I ignored it and tried to walk by when he got in my way and pushed me. I stopped, grabbed his nose, wiggled it and told him to knock it off. I was about to move along when he hit me in the face from behind. I turned around recognizing his arrogant smile of numerical superiority. That’s when my punch bereft him of two of his front teeth (including the roots) and knocked loose eight more.
Back then we were all 16 years old and my teacher stood next to the scene the whole time. But since she was too spineless to intervene I had to take care of the problem myself. Besides, everybody saw that I acted in self-defense, so there were no consequences for me.

Although the effect of the incident was quite surprising. I’ve always been well respected among my classmates but after taking care of this guy even the worst bullies in school wouldn’t even dare looking at me.

If it comes down to physical harassment and violence there is no better remedy than taking out the leader – quickly and as hard as possible. Make an example of him/her and the case will be closed forever.
Until today the above mentioned incident was the only time in my life I had to hit someone. I’m not proud of it but it surely sent the message.
